Alzheimer’s awareness and supportive services and tips on how to pursue a higher education at Montgomery College are the focus of “En Sintonía con el Concejo del Condado de Montgomery”, today at 2 p.m. on Radio America

For Immediate Release: Friday, June 11, 2021

ROCKVILLE, Md., June 11, 2021 — Dr. Alicia Arbaje from the Greater Maryland Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association; Gustavo Minaya, financial aid counselor at Montgomery College; and Emma Wilson, program administrator at Montgomery College’s Department of Workforce Development and Continuing Education will be the featured guests on this week’s En Sintonía con El Concejo del Condado de Montgomery (In Tune with the Montgomery County Council), airing today at 2 p.m. on Radio America (WILC 900AM).

The first part of the show will cover the impact of Alzheimer's disease on the Latino community and provide information on supportive services. According to the National Institute on Aging, Latinos are projected to have the fastest growth in diagnoses of Alzheimer's and dementia. The Centers for Disease Control reports that approximately 3.5 million Latinos may be diagnosed with Alzheimer's or dementia by 2060. An upcoming forum on the topic will take place on Thursday, June 17 at 6 p.m. Learn more about the forum here.

In the second part of the show, guests from Montgomery College will discuss what resources are available for Latino residents to pursue a higher education or a new career in the County, including ESOL classes, financial aid options and the programs offered by Montgomery College. They will also talk about the evolving interests in career paths that the College saw amid the COVID-19 pandemic that, they believe, mirrors the existing workforce needs in the County.

The Montgomery County Council and Radio America have entered a partnership that provides the Latino community with key information on issues and programs. The partnership also provides a forum for residents to express their views and ask questions. The partnership includes the weekly one-hour show each Friday on the Washington metropolitan area’s most popular Spanish language station. Lilian Mass is the show’s host.

Each week, the show features guests talking about important issues before the Council and provides information about programs offered by the County to help residents.
