Press Releases - County Council

Results of the Census and its Impact on Montgomery County will be the Focus of “En Sintonía con el Concejo del Condado de Montgomery”, Oct. 1 at 2 p.m. on Radio America with Councilmember Nancy Navarro

For Immediate Release: Thursday, September 30, 2021

Councilmember Navarro and a guest from the U.S. Census Bureau will speak about different topics related to the 2020 Census data, including redistricting, an increase in the number of councilmembers and the importance of the County's racial equity and social justice law

During this week’s show, Councilmember Navarro will discuss the results of the 2020 Census and changes in the Council in 2022. As is stated in the Montgomery County Charter, every ten years new district limits are defined and traced to mirror changes in population growth. This includes redistricting and, this upcoming year, an increase in the number of Councilmembers from nine to 11, with seven members serving as district representatives and four as at-large members. Councilmember Navarro will also talk about how these district changes must follow the requirements of the County’s racial equity and social justice law, which she authored and spearheaded through the Council, as well as the importance of the “Nuestra Salud y Bienestar” Project and Latino Civic Project for residents. Ms. Ríos-Vargas will join to provide statistical information about the 2020 National Census and will talk about the national trends of the Latino and Hispanic communities.

The Montgomery County Council and Radio America have  entered a partnership that provides the Latino community with key information on issues and programs. The partnership also provides a forum for residents to express their views and ask questions. The partnership includes the weekly one-hour show each Friday on the Washington metropolitan area’s most popular Spanish language station.

Andrea Sarralde and Liliana Henao are the hosts of this week’s show and will continue to co-host the shows this fall.

Each week, the show features guests talking about important issues before the Council and provides information about programs offered by the County to help residents.
