Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett will greet athletes participating in the Maryland Senior Olympics tennis competition at 9 a.m. on Saturday, September 20 at Olney Manor Regional Park, 16601 Georgia Ave.
The Maryland Senior Olympics (MSO) officially got underway on August 30 when more than 200 senior athletes participated in a 5k race at the Kentlands in Gaithersburg. Following that race, events have been held around the state in badminton, basketball, billiards, bowling, lawn bowling, line dancing and shuffleboard.
“The games are not only an opportunity for competition among the athletes, but provide a time of socializing and camaraderie,” said MSO Executive Director Ted Wroth. “The athletes genuinely look forward to the competition against old friends and athletic foes, and it’s really amazing to see their energy, determination and skill.”
Track and field events will also take place on September 20 at the Prince George’s County Sports & Learning Complex in Landover beginning at 9 a.m. At noon on that day, there will be an official program welcoming the athletes. In addition to traditional track and field events that include pole vault, men’s shot put, javelin throw and discus throw, there will also be fun events, including a Frisbee, softball and football throw.
Another event on Saturday is the table tennis competition at the Maryland Table Tennis Association in Eldersburg, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Softball is scheduled for September 25 through 28 at Olney Regional Park. Swimming, golf and racquetball will take place during October. The games will conclude on Sunday, November 2 with a 10k race at King Farm in Rockville.
More than 2,000 athletes over the age of 50 compete in the Maryland Senior Olympics. Many will advance to the National Senior Games to be held in August 2009 in San Francisco.
