Montgomery County Councilmember Will Jawando Awarded the Phyllis Campbell Newsome Public Policy Leadership Award

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, November 16, 2021

ROCKVILLE, Md.— Today, Councilmember Will Jawando was awarded the Phyllis Campbell Newsome Public Policy Leadership Award at the Center for Nonprofit Advancement’s 42nd Annual Celebration recognizing the work of elected and non-elected officials who have gone above and beyond in partnership with the nonprofit sector to ensure more vibrant communities. The award is presented annually to four elected officials, one each serving in the District of Columbia, Virginia, Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties. Councilmember Jawando was nominated by East County’s Kim Jones.

“Having your work as a local policy maker recognized is humbling,” said At-Large Montgomery County Councilmember Jawando. “Our nonprofit community is a critical component of identifying, highlighting, and addressing the needs of our community, and I will continue to pursue solutions that leverage the capacity and many contributions of nonprofits working in Montgomery County.”

Councilmember Jawando has worked on many initiatives with several area nonprofit organizations addressing issues like food insecurity, organizations fulfilling the need of diapers and creating a Guaranteed Income Pilot Program. He shares the 2021 award with Brianne Nadeau, D.C. Councilmember, Ward 1; Angela Alsobrooks, Prince George’s County Executive; and Onassis Burress, City Councilmember, Radford, Virginia. The Phyllis Campbell Newsome Award was named in honor of the Center’s former director of advocacy and community relations after her untimely passing in 2003.

Councilmember Jawando has also been nominated as a finalist for The NewDEAL’s 2021 New Ideas Challenge for his efforts to strengthen police use-of-force policies. The NewDeal is a national network of up-and-coming local and state level, pro-growth progressive elected officials. The award is given to public servants who submit thoughtful, innovative solutions to solve for their community’s challenges. Winners for the award are expected to be announced later this week.
