ROCKVILLE, Md., Nov. 18, 2021 – Today, Montgomery County Councilmember Will Jawando, was awarded The NewDeal’s 2021 Ideas Challenge Award, winning the “Healing Our Democracy and Rebuilding Community” category for New Standards for Police Use of Force policy, prohibiting police officers from using deadly force except when absolutely necessary, and when no other alternatives are available.
“I’m honored to receive this award. Our democracy is in need of healing, and I’m hopeful our efforts being recognized today can serve as a building block for other jurisdictions looking to improve police and community relations and keep all residents safe,” said Councilmember Jawando. “The NewDeal is doing great work in highlighting new, innovative policy proposals, and I’m thrilled to stand among the other winners who are making an impact in their communities.”
The NewDeal is a national network of up-and-coming local and state level, pro-growth progressive elected officials. The award is given to public servants who submit thoughtful, innovative solutions to solve for their community’s challenges. Councilmember Jawando is joined by Representative Nima Kulkami of Louisville, KY, Senator Chris Hansen of Denver, CO, Senator Will Haskell of Westport, CT, and Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird of Lincoln, NE as winners of the 2021 Ideas Challenge.
