Former Montgomery County Executive Sidney Kramer Passes Away

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, May 17, 2022

Montgomery County lost an important and historical figure today, when former County Executive Sidney Kramer passed away. Kramer, who served as a Councilmember, State Senator, and as the third Montgomery County Executive, lead the county during a time of transition and change from 1986 to 1990.

Montgomery County was just beginning its transformation into the diverse, vibrant and culturally-rich County we live in today. Kramer’s energy, passion, and willingness to speak his truth on issues ranging from education, business policy, mental health and advocacy for the aging community impacted many lives. That impact was recognized in 2013 when The Upcounty Regional Services Center was named after him.

County Executive Marc Elrich released this statement upon learning of Kramer's death:

My thoughts are with Sidney’s children Miriam, Rona, and Ben Kramer who have continued their father’s legacy of public service.

Both Rona and Ben have served Maryland as State Senators: Ben currently represents Maryland District 19 in Montgomery County while Rona is the Secretary of Aging in Maryland.

We hope the grief and sorrow his children and grandchildren feel over this loss is alleviated by the cherished memories and lessons they were taught by this extraordinary Montgomery County resident and servant.

County flags will fly at half-staff in honor of Kramer until after his funeral services, which have yet to be announced.

Kramer was 96 years old.
