ROCKVILLE, Md., Nov. 3, 2022—On Friday, November 4 at 2 p.m. in the Executive Office Building, Montgomery County Councilmember Will Jawando, along with Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich and officials from Montgomery College (MC) and the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD), will hold a press conference to sign into law Bill 17-21, the Community Informed Police Training Act.
The Community Informed Police Training Act creates a collaboration with MCPD and local educational partners like MC to develop police cadet recruitment and police training. The bill includes a 30-hour required training for all cadets, trains cadets to understand racial justice better and equips police to be better community guardians.
“Bill 17-21, The Community Informed Police Training Act, is about building the next generation of police officers that serve as community guardians,” said Councilmember Jawando. “It’s a recruitment tool to grow our talent and bring in the diverse, culturally proficient and properly trained officers that our community needs.”
County Executive Elrich and others will join Councilmember Jawando to provide remarks and sign into law Bill 17-21, which was passed by the Council unanimously on Oct. 25, 2022.
