Montgomery County’s Asian American Health Initiative Awards Micro-Grants to 10 Organizations to Support Efforts for Health, Wellness and Social Services

Montgomery County’s Asian American Health Initiative (AAHI), one of three minority health initiatives that are part of the County’s Department of Health and Human Services, has awarded 10 local organizations a total of $71,000 as part of AAHI’s Asian American Center of Excellence (AACE) micro-grants funding opportunity.
The AACE was launched in January to support Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI)-serving community-organizations in developing and increasing their capacity to successfully provide health, wellness and social support programs and services.
Through AACE, AAHI offered micro-grants to improve the capacity, sustainability, and infrastructure of smaller AAPI community-based organizations, faith-based institutions, and non-profits.
AAPI community organizations provide essential and supportive services to the most vulnerable community members. Those services include in-language health and social service hotlines, senior wellness clubs, hot meals for seniors and youth enrichment programs. However, many of the organizations are challenged by limited financial resources so supporting and investing in the organizations enables the County to reach all parts of its diverse population.
AAHI partnered with the Primary Care Coalition (PCC) of Montgomery County to administer the AACE micro-grants. Through a competitive grants process, AAHI and PCC requested proposals from eligible organizations to offer funding in the categories of purchase of equipment, professional development and consultants.
Seventeen organizations submitted proposals and requested more than $190,000.
The 10 organizations that received micro-grants:
American Diversity Group (awarded $12,169.75)
Chinese American Community Health Services (awarded $13,311.84)
Chinese American Parents Association of Montgomery County (awarded $3,796)
Indonesian American Association (awarded $1,500)
Islamic Center of Maryland (awarded $4,969.79)
Korean American Senior Citizens Association of MD (awarded $6,413.90)
Maryland Vietnamese Mutual Association (awarded $10,592.74)
Nepal Education and Cultural Center (awarded $4,065.98)
The Senior Connection of Montgomery County (awarded $13,070)
Vietnamese Literary and Artistic Club (awarded $1,200)
Grantees were notified of their award in March and have until June 30 to make the capacity building changes to their organizations.
