For Immediate Release: Tuesday, August 6, 2024

Montgomery County was recently selected by the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) to host two EV charging stations as part of the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Program.

Francis Energy, an Oklahoma-based EV charging installer and operator, was selected by the State to install and operate EV fast charging stations at two County locations:

  • Colesville Park & Ride - 13504 New Hampshire Ave. in Silver Spring
  • Montgomery County Parking Lot 12 - 1920 Seminary Rd. in Silver Spring

The grant is part of a larger $12.1 million in federal funding the State received to expand electric vehicle charging sites under the NEVI program. The NEVI Program, created by the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, aims to build a reliable nationwide EV charging network. Overall, Maryland announced funding for 130 fast charging ports at 23 in 15 counties across the state.

“We are a state leader in EV ownership with more than 31 percent of Maryland's electric vehicles registered in Montgomery County,” said Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich. “I am one of the EV drivers who will be glad to see the expansion of fast chargers in our County. By expanding our EV charging infrastructure, we are making it easier for residents and visitors to choose electric vehicles and move towards a more sustainable future.”

In a press release announcing the expansion of electric vehicle charging throughout the state, Maryland Governor Wes Moore said, “Clean energy is not just smart for the environment; it creates new jobs for Marylanders and strengthens our economy. Climate action is about more than avoiding disaster. It’s about growing opportunity, and we can – and we will – do both. Maryland takes a back seat to no one in advancing our clean energy goals, and today, we move one step closer to achieving a more sustainable future for all. I want to thank the Biden-Harris Administration and our federal, state and local partners for their support.”

The new fast charging stations will provide EV drivers with quicker and more accessible charging options, encouraging wider adoption of electric vehicles and supporting the county’s environmental goals.

This project aligns with state and local efforts to expand alternative fuel corridors and supports Montgomery County’s Climate Action Plan goals.

“Reliable and convenient charging options make electric vehicle adoption easier, which helps our environment and better serve our community's needs,” said County Department of Environmental Protection Director Jon Monger. “The installation of these fast charging stations is a key part of our strategy to support and help expand EV use throughout the County.”
