Montgomery County Expecting Light Snow Friday Night into Saturday Morning

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation's (MCDOTs) Storm Operations Center (SOC) will activate at 10 p.m. tonight, just before a possible 1-2 inches of snow is estimated to fall, and will monitor and treat County roads as needed. Temperatures will continue to remain below freezing. Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Please use caution if traveling.

Residents are likely to see snowplows driving through neighborhoods with plows raised; this is due to snowpack from freezing temperatures. The plows are able to push off any fresh snow once it accumulates to about three inches and in areas that have been broken up by salt application. However, plows are not able to sufficiently push off solid ice, especially in the evening and late-night hours when temperatures are at their lowest points. When MCDOT snowplow crews encounter this situation, they raise the plow and apply salt, let it activate, and then go back through and push it off. This often takes several attempts depending on the amount of snowpack. 

County snowplows will work throughout Friday night and Saturday to ensure over 5,300 lane miles are passible by emergency vehicles and cars, but residents are unlikely to see bare pavement.

Once the storm ends, residents are encouraged to visit the County’s Snow Portal to get updates on snow response efforts and submit road treatment requests if necessary.
