For Immediate Release: Friday, April 3, 2026

Update: Two new classes, on Saturday, May 23, and Sunday, June 14, have been added to the schedule.
The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) will offer low-cost adult bike classes in April, May, and June.
The classes will now include 11 Learn to Ride and one Basic Skills class. MCDOT will also offer two free, walk-up e-scooter classes following select bike classes.
Advance registration is required to participate in the bicycle classes, with a cost of $10 for Montgomery County residents. There is no charge for Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) or Capital Bikeshare for All members; however, registration is still required.
“Our adult bike and scooter classes are designed to equip residents with the knowledge and hands-on experience they need to ride confidently and safely throughout our community,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. “Whether traveling to work, running errands, or enjoying our parks and trails, choosing to ride is a smart investment in personal health.”
Participants in the Learn to Ride bicycle classes will learn how to start and stop, balance, glide, pedal, and steer a bike. Each student will progress at their own pace. Students in the Basic Skills class should be able to ride a bicycle and will continue to practice basic biking skills. The classes will be led by experienced WABA instructors.
The classes are open to residents 18 and over, are limited to 25 people, and fill up quickly.
Online registration for June class registration will open at 9 a.m. on Friday, May 1.

Adult Basic Skills Bike class schedule:
Residents can drop-in anytime during the two-hour adult e-scooter classes immediately following the bike classes on April 25 and June 7. E-scooter classes do not require pre-registration. Anyone 18 or over with a valid driver’s license or ID can join. E-scooters and helmets are provided.
"We’re excited to see continued enthusiasm for our adult bike and e-scooter classes,” said MCDOT Director Chris Conklin. "MCDOT is committed to making cycling a safe, affordable, and accessible option for all residents. We’re advancing our protected bike lane projects and strengthening those connections to transit. Montgomery County has more than 100 miles of bike lanes, bike-friendly road shoulders, and separated bike lanes. With spring around the corner, now is a great time to learn how to ride a bike.”
