For Immediate Release: Wednesday, June 2, 2004
Young people may sign up for the “Readers Rule” Summer Reading Club 2004 at the nearest public library beginning June 15. Designed to encourage young readers to make books part of their summer routine, the program this year features beloved and familiar characters from folk and fairy tales.
Children of all ages can join the Readers Rule Club anytime between June 15 and July 31. Throughout the summer, young readers may visit their local libraries to pick up their Summer Reading Log and receive recommendations for books to read, in addition to information on prizes and programs. Summer Reading Club ends August 14.
Using gameboards, children are invited to explore reading activities that are divided into four quests, with each quest requiring six activities. At the end of each quest, young readers must bring the appropriate coupon to the library to earn a royal treasure.
The fourth and final coupon, which must be returned between August 2 and 14, entitles the reader to receive a Summer Reading Certificate, including a coupon for a free book at Barnes & Noble. With their parents’ consent, their names will also be listed in the Gazette Newspaper and/or the Montgomery County Public Libraries website.
Summer Reading Club 2004 is funded by the Friends of the Library, Montgomery County, Maryland, Inc. Other sponsors are: ABC WJLA-TV, BAPA’s Imagination Stage, Barnes & Noble, Bethesda’s Big Train Baseball, D.C. United, Frederick Keys, Gazette Newspapers, Jerry’s Subs and Pizza, Karate Learning Centers, McDonald’s Family Restaurants of Montgomery County, MD, the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair, and Pizza Hut.
