Arrest Made in Two Rockville Pike Carjacking Cases

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, November 14, 2012

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Major Crimes Division – Robbery Section have been investigating two separate carjacking cases along Rockville Pike in Rockville and North Bethesda.

Earlier this month, detectives located and arrested 27-year-old Byron Deshane Govan of the 10000 block of Wamsley Court in White Plains, MD at his residence.  Govan is charged with several counts of auto theft, carjacking, and robbery, as well as using a firearm during the commission of a crime.

This information was not immediately released because detectives believed that Govan may have been involved in similar crimes in nearby jurisdictions.

On September 27 at approximately 9:57 p.m. in Congressional Plaza, 110 Congressional Lane in Rockville, an adult female victim’s vehicle and her property were taken by a black male suspect who implied a weapon.  Following the carjacking, the victim’s checks were used at various locations in other jurisdictions and video of the suspect was obtained by investigators. The second incident occurred on October 31 at approximately 2:00 p.m. at 11200 Rockville Pike near White Flint Mall.  A couple was forced from their vehicle by a black male suspect holding a black handgun.  The suspect obtained the victims’ wallets and fled in their vehicle.  A short time later, officers from the 2nd District located the vehicle on I-495 and a brief pursuit ensued ending near Colesville Road and Spring Avenue in downtown Silver Spring.  The suspect fled on foot and was not located.

Surveillance footage of that suspect was obtained and compared to the footage from the September 27 incident. The suspect was believed to be the same individual.

Govan is currently being held on bond and is awaiting a late November court date.
