For Immediate Release: Saturday, January 19, 2013

Detectives from the 3rd District Investigative Section have made an arrest in the assault and robbery of an elderly female that occurred on January 15th at the Safeway Store located at 13814 Outlet Drive in the Briggs Chaney area.  The suspect is identified as Ricky Antonio Jefferson, age 45, of the 14100 block of Castle Boulevard in Silver Spring.

During the investigation of this robbery, detectives obtained video of the robbery captured on store surveillance and released the video and photographs to the public.  Officers also canvassed the area of the Safeway (located in the Briggs Chaney Shopping Center) and asked people if they knew or recognized the suspect.  As a result of these efforts, information was received that the suspect frequented the area of the Briggs Chaney Shopping Center and possibly lived in the area.  Plain clothes officers began surveillance of the area.

Yesterday evening at approximately 5:30 p.m., plain clothes officers conducting surveillance observed a subject matching the description of the suspect walk down Castle Boulevard and enter an apartment building  in the 14100 block of Castle Boulevard.  The subject was wearing clothing similar to that worn by the suspect during the robbery.  At approximately 9:30 p.m., the suspect exited that apartment building and began walking towards the Briggs Chaney Shopping Center.  Officers stopped him and shortly thereafter, he was arrested without incident.  The suspect, identified as Jefferson, was transported to the Central Processing Unit and charged with robbery, second degree assault, and theft under $100.

A photograph of Jefferson is not available at this time.
