Detectives Investigate Single-Vehicle Fatal Collision

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department-Collision Reconstruction Unit are investigating a single-vehicle fatal collision that occurred just after midnight in Silver Spring.

This morning (October 21) at approximately 12:02 a.m., officers and Fire and Rescue personnel responded to the intersection of Gist Avenue and Ray Drive for the report of a single vehicle collision involving a fire.

Preliminary investigation has indicated that a 2012 Volkswagen Passat was traveling south on Gist Avenue. In the area of Ray Drive, for reasons still under investigation, the car left the roadway and struck a tree. The vehicle then caught on fire.

The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, identified as Mohammed Shafiq Khan, age 21, of the 7500 block of Chestnut Avenue of Takoma Park, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
