Detectives Investigate Fatal Pedestrian Collision in Bethesda

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, January 5, 2016

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department - Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a fatal pedestrian collision that occurred this morning in Bethesda.  The pedestrian, identified as Devika Gunasekere, age 67, of Monroe Street in Rockville, was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.  Gunasekere succumbed to her injuries earlier this evening.

This morning at approximately 7:50, officers and Fire&Rescue personnel responded to the intersection of Old Georgetown Road and Battery Lane for the report of a collision involving a pedestrian.

Preliminary investigation has indicated that Gunasekere was crossing Old Georgetown Road from west to east at Battery Lane.  Detectives believe that Gunasekere was in the area of a marked crosswalk.  A Montgomery County Ride On Bus was attempting to make a left turn from westbound Battery Lane onto southbound Old Georgetown Road and collided with Gunasekere.  The driver of the Ride On Bus is identified as Kenneth Mullen, Jr., age 44, of Shadow Oak Court in Montgomery Village.

The four passengers on the bus at the time of the collision were uninjured.  Mullen, Jr., was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injures.

Detectives continue to investigate what the traffic signal and pedestrian crossing signal showed at the time of the collision.

This collision remains under investigation.  Anyone with information regarding this collision is asked to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620.
