Update: Suspect Arrested for Briggs Chaney Area Homicide

For Immediate Release: Thursday, April 21, 2016

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department - Major Crimes Division have arrested Mouctar Sylla, age 27, of the 13800 block of Castle Boulevard, for the March 11 homicide of Sheldon Williams.  Sylla has been charged with second-degree murder, the use of a firearm in the commission of a murder, illegal possession of a firearm by a person convicted of a crime of violence, and possession of a controlled dangerous substance (marijuana) with the intent to distribute it.

On March 11 at approximately 10:12 p.m., 9-1-1- received a call for the sound of shots fired in the 13800 block of Castle Boulevard.  Officers responded to the area but did not locate any evidence of a crime.   At approximately 11:56 p.m., officers responded to the same area of Castle Boulevard for the report of a deceased person, later identified as Williams, who had been found along a paved trail.  The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled the manner of Williams’ death a homicide due to a gunshot wound to the back of the head.

During the investigation, Sylla was developed as a suspect.  Detectives determined that the victim went to Sylla's apartment on Castle Boulevard on March 11 to purchase marijuana. The facts and circumstances surrounding what occurred when Sylla and Williams met are still under investigation, but at some point during this time, Sylla shot Williams.

Yesterday (April 20), investigators executed a search warrant at Sylla's apartment.  In Sylla's apartment, detectives located items indicative of drug distribution to include a digital scale, plastic bags, bags of marijuana labeled for sale, and approximately $11,690 in cash. Subsequent to the execution of the search warrant, Sylla was arrested and was transported to the Central Processing Unit.  He is being held on a $300,000 bond.
