Police Investigate Fatal Bicycle Collision in Gaithersburg

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department – Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a fatal collision involving a bicyclist that occurred this afternoon.

Today at approximately 2:34 p.m., Montgomery County Police (6th District officers), Gaithersburg Police officers, and Fire and Rescue personnel responded to South Frederick Avenue (Route 355) and Fulks Corner Avenue for the report of a serious collision.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the bicyclist was traveling northbound on the sidewalk of the southbound side of South Frederick Avenue.  The bicyclist struck a commercial sign that had been placed on the sidewalk and fell into the travel lanes of South Frederick Avenue.  He was struck by a 2004 Toyota Highlander.  The bicyclist, identified as Santos Escobar-Villatoro, age 16, of the 100 block of North Summit Avenue in Gaithersburg, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.  The driver of the Toyota Highlander, identified as Atiana Shailise Sarkis, age 18, of the 500 block of Reading Avenue in West Reading, Pennsylvania, was not injured.

The circumstances surrounding this collision remain under investigation. Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed this fatal collision to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773- 6620. Callers may remain anonymous.
