Detectives Investigate Bethesda Fatal Bicycle Collision

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department – Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a fatal collision involving a bicyclist that occurred today in Bethesda.

On Monday, October 17 at approximately 11:28 a.m., 2nd District officers, Maryland-National Capital Park Police officers, and Fire and Rescue personnel responded to Little Falls Parkway and the Capital Crescent Trail, which is located on Little Falls Parkway between the intersections of Arlington Road and Hillandale Road, for the report of a collision involving a vehicle and a bicycle.

The preliminary investigation has indicated that the operator of the three-wheeled recumbent bicycle was travelling eastbound on the Capital Crescent Trail and was crossing Little Falls Parkway in the area of a marked crosswalk.  A 2002 Mercedes E320 that was travelling southbound on Little Falls Parkway collided with the bicycle.

The bicyclist was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.  The bicyclist is identified as Ned Gaylin, age 81, of the 4600 block of Norwood Drive in Chevy Chase.

The driver of the Mercedes was not injured.  He is identified as Nils Carl Axel Rudelius, age 78, of the 5900 block of Rolston Road in Bethesda.
