Detectives Investigate Fatal Hit-And-Run Pedestrian Collision; Suspect Located By Police

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department- Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a fatal hit-and-run pedestrian collision that occurred early this morning in Silver Spring. The suspect, who left the collision scene, was located by a Montgomery County Police Officer and was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. No formal charges have been brought against the driver at this time. Formal charges, if any are to be brought, will be placed once the collision investigation is complete.

At approximately 2:27 am this morning, officers and Fire and Rescue personnel responded to a pedestrian-involved collision on Colesville Road at Fenton Street. Preliminary investigation has revealed that the pedestrian, identified as Donald Morgan, Jr., age 49, of Tuckerman Street, NW in Washington, D.C., was crossing Colesville Road in an easterly direction in the area of a marked crosswalk at Fenton Street. A 2016 Honda Accord, driven by Janet Brown, age 30, of Briarwood Drive in Laurel, was traveling northbound on Colesville Road and struck the pedestrian. Witnesses observed Brown stop after the collision, exit her vehicle, and then leave the scene. Witnesses were able to provide responding officers with a description of the striking vehicle (to include the car's tag number) and a description of the driver.

The description of the striking vehicle and driver was broadcast to officers. An officer observed the vehicle traveling northbound Georgia Avenue just south of Colesville Road and initiated a traffic stop. Brown, identified as the driver of the vehicle, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Officers began attempting life-saving measures on Morgan at the collision scene. He was transported to Holy Cross Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
