Bethesda Man Charged with Sexual Offense Against Teenager

For Immediate Release: Friday, June 2, 2017

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department – Special Victims Investigations Division (SVID) have arrested and charged Howard Earl Alpert, age 73, of Adelaide Drive in Bethesda, with a fourth-degree sex offense and the sexual abuse of a teenage male.  Alpert was a teacher at a charter school in Washington, D.C.  The victim in this case was not a student at the school.

In late May, SVID detectives began an investigation into an allegation of sexual abuse of a minor by Alpert.   Investigators learned that in the early summer of 2015, the victim met Alpert when the juvenile began doing paid yard work at Alpert’s home.  The victim continued doing this work through the end of May of this year (2017).  During this time, when the victim came to the home to do yard work, Alpert would invite him in the home to eat and talk.  Alpert had inappropriate sexual contact with the victim without the victim’s consent.  Alpert took photographs of the victim working in the yard and on at least one occasion instructed the victim to take off the victim’s shirt and took a photograph of the shirtless juvenile.

This morning, Alpert was arrested at his residence and was transported to the Central Processing Unit.   Bond information for Alpert is not available at this time.

Anyone who has information regarding inappropriate contact that Alpert may have had with juveniles is asked to call the Special Victims Investigations Division at 240-773-5400.

For information about Alpert's employment as a DC charter school teacher, please email: Chief Communications Officer for the DC Public Charter School Board Tomeika Bowden at tbowden@dcpcsb.org.
