Update: Major Crimes Detectives Continue to Investigate Double Homicide; Urging Those With Information To Call Police

For Immediate Release: Friday, June 16, 2017

Major Crimes detectives continue to work to identify the suspects responsible for the double homicide of 17-year-old Shadi Adi Najjar and 18-year-old Artem S. Ziberov that occurred in Montgomery Village on Monday, June 5.

Today, June 16, at a press conference at the Public Safety Headquarters, the Director of the Major Crimes Division provided the following information about the ongoing investigation:

Detectives do not believe that these homicides were a random act.  They believe that there is more than one suspect and that there was a connection between the suspects and one or both victims.  The connection and motive remain under investigation.

Detectives confirmed that they located 30 shell casings from multi- caliber firearms at the scene.  One of the victims was struck ten times.  The other victim was struck four times.  (Detectives are not releasing which specific victim is associated with the number of shots at this time).  Other rounds hit the vehicle and went into the neighborhood.

Detectives have confirmed that an audio recording from a Montgomery Village resident's home security system did capture the sound of the gunshots that resulted in these homicides.  The recording had previously been independently obtained by some media outlets.

Detectives believe that there are still people who have information about these homicides who have not come forward to police.  The Department urges anyone who has information about this double homicide to contact the Major Crimes Division at 240-773-5070.  For those who wish to remain anonymous, Crime Solvers of Montgomery County is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for any information that leads to the arrest of the suspect(s).  Anonymous tipsters can call Crime Solvers of Montgomery County toll-free at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477).
