For Immediate Release: Tuesday, December 19, 2017
The Montgomery County Police Department continues to remind its residents of the dangers of impaired driving and urges everyone to always choose a sober ride.
On Saturday, December 16, at approximately 11:14 p.m., 1st District officers, Rockville City police officers, and Fire and Rescue personnel responded
to a fatal collision involving a Tao Tao Scooter and BMW at the intersection of Rockville Pike (Route 355) and Congressional Lane. The driver of the BMW fled the scene on foot. He was located by officers a short time later on Congressional Lane and arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI). The driver of the scooter succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
Officers closed the collision scene roadway to vehicular traffic to allow the Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) detectives who arrived at the scene to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision. During the investigation, two additional drivers arriving at the road closure were arrested for DUI:
- Rockville City Police officers were conducting traffic control at the intersection of Rockville Pike and Templeton Place due to the road being closed for the collision investigation. Two marked patrol cruisers, emergency lights activated, were blocking the intersection. Two uniformed Rockville City officers wearing reflective traffic control vests were standing in the middle of the intersection directing approaching vehicles to turn around. At approximately 1:50 a.m. (on December 17), a vehicle approached the intersection, stopped, and did not move for several minutes. One of the officers approached the vehicle to assist the driver and observed that the driver was showing signs of impairment. The 27-year-old male driver was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
- At 3:51 a.m. (on December 17), Collision Reconstruction Unit detectives were conducting their investigation in the road (closed to vehicular traffic) when a vehicle failed to stop at the point of the road closure (Rockville Pike and Templeton Place). The vehicle ran over traffic cones and drove past a State Highway Administration dump truck that was parked in the road and was displaying flashing lights and “Road Closed” signs. Detectives, hearing the approaching vehicle and the sounds of the car hitting the traffic cones, attempted to signal for the car to stop – one officer using his flashlight. Recognizing that the car was not slowing, the detectives moved from the road. The car continued through the collision scene and was stopped by the Sergeant of the Collision Reconstruction Unit. The 20-year-old female driver was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
The Montgomery County Police Department remains committed to the enforcement of alcohol-related offenses.
