Suspect Arrested for Silver Spring Attempted Rape

For Immediate Release: Friday, April 20, 2018

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department – Special Victims Investigations Division have charged Nahom Mamo, age 19, of an unconfirmed address, with the sexual assault and attempted second-degree rape of a 17-year-old female.  Mamo committed these offenses yesterday morning inside an apartment building lobby in Silver Spring.

On Thursday, April 19 at approximately 7:29 a.m., 3rd District officers responded to the 8700 block of Colesville Road for the report of an attempted rape that just occurred.

The investigation by officers revealed that the suspect was standing in the lobby of an apartment building located in the 8700 block of Colesville Road and engaged the victim in a conversation as she walked past him.  During the conversation, the suspect grabbed the victim by her wrists and sexually assaulted her.  The victim broke free from the suspect’s grasp, fled, and called 9-1-1.

The victim provided responding officers with the suspect’s physical description.  Officers located an individual exiting the apartment building who matched the suspect’s description and whose pants were unzipped.  They stopped the subject and identified him as Mamo.  The victim identified Mamo as the suspect who had assaulted her.   Mamo was arrested and during a police interview, he admitted to grabbing the victim and stated to investigators that he wanted to have sexual intercourse with her.

Mamo was transported to the Central Processing Unit where he was charged with attempted second-degree rape, fourth-degree sexual offense - sexual contact, and second-degree assault.  Mamo was held without bond and will have bond review today in District Court.
