Update: Public’s Tips Lead to Arrest of Germantown Commercial Robbery Suspect

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, August 22, 2018

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department – Major Crimes Division have arrested and charged Ashley Nachelle Watts, age 23, of the 20500 block of Golf Course Drive in Germantown, with the August 11 robbery that occurred at the Shoppers grocery store in Germantown.

On Saturday, August 11, at approximately 9:05 p.m., 5th District officers responded to the Shoppers grocery store located at 18066 Mateny Road for the report of an assault that had just occurred.

The investigation by detectives determined that Watts entered the grocery store, approached the 47-year-old female employee who was behind a counter, and demanded baby formula which was kept in a locked case.  Watts assaulted the employee and then fled from the grocery store without obtaining any property.    Fire and Rescue personnel responded and transported the employee to a local hospital for treatment of her non-life-threatening injuries.

On August 20, detectives released surveillance video of two suspects to the media and public and asked for help in identifying them.  Investigators received multiple tips which led to the identification of Watts as one of the suspects.  Investigators also identified and interviewed the additional female suspect.  During the investigation of the second suspect’s involvement, it was determined that she did not participate in this robbery.

On August 21, Watts was arrested on the strength of a Montgomery County arrest warrant charging her with one count of robbery, one count of second-degree assault, and one count of destruction of property.  Watts was released after posting a $3,500 bond.
