Detectives Investigate Fatal Bicycle-Involved Collision in Wheaton Area

Update: November 21, 2018: The bicyclist is identified as Jaimie Roberto Diaz Caceres, age 47, of the 2300 block of Weisman Road in Silver Spring.

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department – Collision Reconstruction Unit are investigating a fatal bicycle-involved collision that occurred this evening in the Wheaton area.

On Wednesday, November 7 at approximately 6:26, 4th District officers and Fire and Rescue personnel responded to the intersection of Randolph Road at Goodhill Road for the report of a serious collision involving a bicyclist and a vehicle.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that the 47-year-old adult male bicyclist was traveling on the roadway of westbound Randolph Road approaching Goodhill Road.  A 2019 BMW M240i was also traveling westbound on Randolph Road and approaching Goodhill Road.  For reasons still under investigation, the bicyclist crossed the westbound lanes of Randolph Road in a southwest direction and collided with the BMW.  The bicyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.  The identity of the bicyclist will be released once family members have been notified.

The driver of the BMW is identified as Yale Abraham Tankus, age 57, of the 100 block of Lillian Lane in Silver Spring.  Tankus was not injured in this collision.
