Update: Detectives Investigate Multiple Fatality Vehicle Collision in Silver Spring

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department – Collision Reconstruction Unit are investigating a fatal traffic collision that occurred this morning in the Silver Spring area.

On Saturday, November 10, 2018, at approximately 5:43 a.m., 3rd District officers and Fire/Rescue personnel responded to the intersection of New Hampshire Avenue at Northampton Drive for the report of a collision involving a Peapod Freightliner.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that a 2018 Freightliner MT45, driven by James Richard Bailey Jr., was traveling southbound on New Hampshire Avenue when it struck a 1997 Toyota Corolla which was traveling northbound on New Hampshire Avenue and was in the process of making a left turn onto Northampton Drive.

The 1997 Toyota Corolla was driven by an adult male and contained two additional passengers – an adult male and an adult female. The adult male driver, identified as Ismael Melchor Salazar, age 39 or Hyattsville, MD, succumbed to his injuries on the scene. The adult female passenger, identified as Maribel Zelaya de Reyes, age 41, of Hyattsville, MD, was transported to a local hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. The adult male passenger was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Freightliner is identified as James Richard Bailey Jr. who was not injured in the collision.
