Detectives Continue to Investigate Officer-Involved Shooting in Germantown; Suspect Charged

Detectives with the Major Crimes Division continue to investigate an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Sunday, November 11, on Cross Laurel Court in Germantown.  The suspect, identified as Devin Conlon Brunner, age 26, of Cross Laurel Court, has been charged with six counts of first-degree assault.

On Sunday, November 11 at approximately 2:42 p.m., the Emergency Communications Center received multiple calls regarding a male who was armed with a gun.  The male was outside in the parking area of the townhouse community on Cross Laurel Court and was pointing the gun at numerous homes.  One caller stated that when he went outside, the suspect pointed a handgun at him.   The caller went back into his home and told another resident about the situation.  Both residents looked out the window and observed the suspect pointing the handgun at them.

Numerous officers from the 5th District responded to Cross Laurel Court.  The officers encountered Brunner in the cul-de-sac in possession of a gun in his hand.  Brunner did not comply with repeated commands by the officers to drop the handgun.  During the encounter, Brunner pointed the gun at the officers and was subsequently shot.  No officers were injured.

Officers rendered first aid and called for the assistance of Fire and Rescue personnel.  Brunner was transported to a local hospital for treatment where he remains. He is expected to survive.

Investigation revealed that the gun that Brunner had in his possession was a pellet gun designed to resemble an authentic firearm.

Today, Brunner was served with a warrant charging him with four counts of first-degree assault against a police officer and two counts of first-degree assault against a resident.  Brunner is being held on a no-bond status.

The officers who discharged their handguns are identified as James Baker, Andres Naranjo-Cano, Mark Kopp, and Sarah Obando. The officers are currently assigned to the Patrol Division and work in the 5th District.  As is protocol, Officers Baker, Naranjo-Cano, Kopp, and Obando have been placed on paid administrative leave during this investigation.

Body-worn camera footage from responding officers has been reviewed by investigative personnel.
