For Immediate Release: Tuesday, June 25, 2019

Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division have arrested and charged Raul Gerardo Castro, age 32, of the 200 block of Olde Towne Avenue in Gaithersburg, for an armed robbery of a Sandy Spring Bank that occurred in Montgomery Village in 2017.

On June 12, 2017, at approximately 2:18 p.m., 6th District officers responded to the Sandy Spring Bank located at 9921 Stedwick Road for the report of a bank robbery that had just occurred.  The investigation by detectives revealed that the suspect entered the bank, approached a teller, and passed a note that demanded money.  The note implied that the suspect had a weapon.  The suspect obtained an undisclosed amount of cash and fled from the bank.

On June 13, 2017, detectives released a photograph of the suspect to the media and public and asked for help in identifying him.

On June 10, 2019, investigators received a tip which led to the identification of Castro as the suspect.

On June 21, 2019, Castro was arrested near his home on the strength of a Montgomery County arrest warrant charging him with one count of armed robbery.  Castro was released after posting a $20,000 bond.

The police department thanks the tipster who provided the information that led to Castro’s identification and arrest.
