Detectives Investigate Fatal Collision Involving Pedestrian in Silver Spring

Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police - Collision Reconstruction Unit are investigating a fatal pedestrian collision that occurred yesterday in Silver Spring.

On Monday, December 9, at approximately 6:46 p.m., officers from the 4th District and MCFRS personnel responded to the 1100 block of University Boulevard West for the report of a personal injury collision involving an adult female pedestrian.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 1990 Chevrolet USPS mail truck, driven by Thanh Van Cao, age 57, of Gaithersburg, was traveling westbound on University Boulevard when it struck Rita Jo Sultan, age 81, of Silver Spring, who was attempting to cross University Boulevard in a northerly direction. Rita Jo Sultan was pronounced deceased at the scene. Thanh Van Cao was not injured and remained on the scene.
