Detectives Investigate Fatal Collision in Gaithersburg

Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a fatal collision that occurred early this morning in Gaithersburg.

On Tuesday, November 10, at approximately 5:45 a.m., an off-duty MCP officer, who was in a marked cruiser, observed a serious collision occur on Shady Grove Road at Metro Access Road.  1st District officers, 6th District officers, and Fire & Rescue personnel responded to assist the off-duty officer.

Preliminary investigation by detectives determined that a 2012 Freightliner commercial truck was traveling east on Shady Grove Road approaching Metro Access Road.  A 2004 Toyota Solara was turning left from Metro Access Road onto westbound Shady Grove Road.  For reasons still under investigation, the Freightliner and the Solara collided on Shady Grove Road.

The driver of the Freightliner, identified as Bernard Mawuli, Kledo, age 41, of Ebbtide Circle in Germantown, was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Solara, identified as Juan David Rodriguez, age 24, of Bonnett Court in Laurel, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
