2020 Holiday Alcohol Task Force Enforcement – Week Four

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, December 16, 2020

Holiday Alcohol Task Force officers are devoting their full-time and attention to detecting alcohol-related offenses this holiday season.

During this past week’s enforcement (evening of December 9, 10, 11, and 12):

  • task force officers arrested 48 people for driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs (DUI).*
  • 9 of the 48 people arrested for DUI were arrested for DUI after being involved in a collision.
During the past four weeks of enforcement:

  • task force officers arrested a total of 152 people for DUI
  • 26 of the 152 people arrested for DUI were arrested for DUI after being involved in a collision.
Details of one collision involving driver who was DUI:

On December 11 at approximately 1:05 am, a task force officer observed a Toyota Rav4 travelling at a high rate of speed on southbound Hungerford Drive in the area of North Campus Drive in Rockville.  The officer observed the vehicle hit the concrete median and then hit the curb in the northbound lanes of traffic.  The vehicle then struck the fence to the Metro tracks and travelled approximately 100 feet before coming to rest on the tracks. The 22-year-old male driver was taken into custody and charged with DUI and traffic offenses.

*It should be noted that the above arrests include only those arrests made by task force officers and do not include the additional arrests made by patrol officers in the performance of their duties.  Therefore, the overall number of DUI arrests made by officers during this time period is higher.

**For future reference, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a restriction in place that bars and restaurants in Maryland were to close at 10:00 pm and there was a capacity limit for bars and restaurants during this week of enforcement.
