Update: Suspect Charged with Germantown Attempted Carjacking after Arrest for Purse Snatching in Germantown

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, January 12, 2021

Detectives from the Major Crimes Division have charged Rashad Hakim Jones, age 19, of the 18800 block of Broken Oak Road in Boyds, with the December 31, 2020 assault and attempted carjacking of a 19-year-old female that occurred outside a gas station in Germantown. Jones was arrested on January 3 for a purse snatching that occurred at a grocery store in Germantown and during that arrest officers determined Jones was the attempted carjacking suspect.

At approximately 8:00 a.m. on December 31, 2020, 5th District officers responded to a gas station located at 18701 Liberty Mill Road for the report of an attempted carjacking that had just occurred.

The investigation by detectives determined that the victim was standing outside her vehicle at a gas pump when the suspect approached her.  The suspect demanded the victim’s car keys and then assaulted the victim.  The suspect did not obtain the victim’s car keys and fled the area on foot.

Later that afternoon, detectives released surveillance video of the male suspect to the media and public and asked for the public’s help in identifying him.  Investigators were notified by a resident that he/she had Ring home video showing the suspect walking in a residential neighborhood near where the attempted carjacking occurred.

On Thursday, January 3, at approximately 4:30 p.m., the Emergency Communications Center received a call for the report of a purse snatching that had just occurred at a grocery store located in the 18800 block of Leaman Farm Road in Germantown.  The victim provided responding officers with a description of the male suspect.  Fifth District officers observed an individual in the area of the grocery store who matched the suspect’s description.  Officers stopped the individual and identified him as Jones.  During the investigation of the purse snatching, officers observed that Jones was wearing the same clothing and carrying the same face mask that the suspect in the December 31 attempted carjacking was seen wearing on both the gas station surveillance video and the Ring home video.

Jones was arrested and transported to Public Safety Headquarters.  During a police interview, Jones made statements acknowledging his involvement in the December 31 assault and attempted carjacking.

Fifth District officers charged Jones with one count of theft: $1,500 to under $25,000.

Major Crimes detectives charged Jones with one count of attempt carjacking and one count of second-degree assault.  He is being held without bond.

The Department thanks the tipster who provided the Ring home video which helped identify Jones as the suspect in the December 31 attempted carjacking.
