Statement from Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich on the Announcement of the Interim Montgomery College President

For Immediate Release: Tuesday 8 June

This is a time of transition for Montgomery College; and the departure of Dr. DeRionne Pollard, who led the college for over a decade, is a tremendous loss for the County and higher education in the state of Maryland.

Dr. Pollard’s trailblazing leadership has garnered national prominence, awards, and other forms of recognition of Montgomery College’s excellent educational and cultural opportunities provided to the students. Her impact extended beyond the college with her involvement with numerous County and community causes. But most importantly, Dr. Pollard has been a role model and mentor to her students and staff members. I had the honor of working with Dr. Pollard throughout her tenure and will always remain grateful to her dedication to equity, willingness to collaborate, and always innovative ideas. I wish Dr. Pollard great success in her career, and joy in her life, with her new role as president of Nevada State College.

Today’s news that former Prince George’s Community College President Dr. Charlene Dukes will be taking over as interim president of Montgomery College is exciting news. As a former member of the State Board of Education, Dr. Dukes brings extensive knowledge of the state and regional educational issues. She is nationally known for the incredible work she did to advance Prince George’s Community College, which will be tremendous asset during this transition period. We are thankful to have Dr. Dukes help guide Montgomery College through this transition, and I look forward to working with her and the college’s administration as we continue to grow and expand Montgomery College.
