Statement from Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich on Donation Offer from Owners of White’s Ferry

I am pleased to see the announcement that Chuck and Stacy Kuhn are offering to donate White’s Ferry to Montgomery County. This represents an important milestone in the journey to restore ferry service between Montgomery County and Loudoun County, Virginia. I want to thank Chuck and Stacy Kuhn for their generous offer to donate the ferry.
Earlier today, the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) met with the Kuhn’s representatives to begin discussing the nature and timing of the donation. I look forward to finalizing these arrangements. This is a necessary step toward restoring the ferry services that are so important to the residents and businesses in and around the Town of Poolesville, C&O Canal National Park visitors and residents and businesses around the Town of Leesburg, Virginia.
I am optimistic that we can reach an agreement on the terms of the donation and build momentum toward a complete solution to the issues that led to the cessation of ferry service over three years ago.
While the offer to donate the ferry is a major step forward, we need to continue efforts to restore public use of the ferry landing in Virginia. Without public access to the Virginia landing, our efforts to restore service remain stalled. MCDOT, in cooperation with the Maryland Department of Transportation, is continuing conversations with the Virginia landowner, with Loudoun County and with the Virginia Department of Transportation as we seek a solution to this critical need. I look forward to a positive resolution to the matter as quickly as possible.
