Statement from Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich on Latest Fatal Federal Agent Shooting in Minneapolis

For Immediate Release: Saturday 24 January

“Our hearts are with the residents, families, business owners, and public officials in Minneapolis as they grapple with yet another fatal shooting tied to aggressive federal immigration enforcement.

The federal occupation in Minneapolis and throughout Minnesota over the past month has been tragic and deeply troubling. Communities across the country, as well as here in Montgomery County, are living with the reality that ICE activity has intensified in ways that increase fear, heighten tensions, and risk serious harm.

No neighborhood should feel like a battlefield. No family should fear that routine encounters with federal government officials will end in violence. Montgomery County stands in solidarity with Minneapolis. We share their concern, their grief, and their demand for accountability and transparency.

Elected leaders at every level need to step up and push back on the President, the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, and ICE. This moment requires leadership that prioritizes public safety, restraint, and the rule of law over political posturing. Federal agencies must de-escalate their actions immediately before more lives are lost and more communities are thrown into chaos.

We can enforce laws without terrorizing neighborhoods. We can uphold safety without escalating violence. And we must demand that our federal government do better.”
