to host County’s first ‘STEM Summit’
on Sun., Feb. 26,
at Silver Spring Civic Building

ROCKVILLE, MD, February 24, 2017—Montgomery County Council Vice President Hans Riemer, in an effort to inspire increased participation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) educational programs, will host the County’s first-ever “STEM Summit” from 12:30-4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 26, featuring a powerful lineup of speakers from the County’s educational and business technology communities. The free event will be held at the Silver Spring Civic Building in Downtown Silver Spring.
The event is aiming to attract educators from the pre-kindergarten to college levels, business leaders, employers, elected officials, service providers, industry practitioners, parents and students.
Councilmember Riemer will deliver opening remarks at the summit and Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Jack Smith will be the keynote speaker.
There will be two featured panel discussions. The first will be on “The Future of STEM and Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 12 Education.” Scheduled to participate on that panel are KID Museum Founder and Executive Director Cara Lesser, Director of District Learning Michael Robbins, Mary Ellen Icaza of Montgomery County Public Libraries and Montgomery’s Director of the Department of Recreation Gabriel Albornoz.
The second panel will focus on “The Future of STEM, College and the Workforce.” Participating on that panel will be Executive Director of the Universities at Shady Grove Stewart Edelstein, Montgomery College President DeRionne P. Pollard, Manager of Telepresence and Virtual Worlds Training for United Therapeutics Corporation Jenesis Rothblatt and MdBio Foundation CEO Brian Gaines.
“The goal of this summit is to build the Montgomery County STEM infrastructure by getting people from all aspects of the community more involved,” said Council Vice President Riemer. “We are showcasing best practices in STEM education, laying out a vision for the future and asking for input on an effective STEM engagement strategy that will work for Montgomery County.”
