How to recycle / dispose motor oil

Search for another material

Residents may bring up to 5 gallons of motor oil, most other oils, hydraulic fluids, and kerosene at no charge to our Shady Grove Processing Facility and Transfer Station.

  • Go to the Recycling Area.
  • Look for the collection containers in the center of this area, under the pavilion.
  • Pour in your oil/fluid into the appropriate container.

So that the oils and fluids may be recycled, do not mix them with any other fluids.

Some area gas and services stations accept used motor oil. Check with stations near you.

Are there exemptions to the 5 gallon limit?

Certain residential and Over the Road (OTR) vehicle owners may apply for an exemption to dispose of more than 5 gallons. Those owners should apply using the Used Oil Disposal Exemption Form. After applying, requests will be reviewed by staff to determine if the exemption is justified.

What do I do with used oil filters?

We accept used vehicle and small engine oil filters from your home at the Shady Grove Processing Facility and Transfer Station at no charge.

  • Go to the Recycling Area.
  • Look for the oil collection containers in the center of this Area, under the pavilion.
  • Place your filter into the labeled used oil filter barrel next to the oil collection containers.

For used oil filters from your business, contract directly with a used oil filter recycler.

What do I do with plastic motor oil bottles?

Dispose of empty plastic motor oil bottles as trash.

Do not place your empty containers into your recycling bin.

What do I do with old gasoline?

We accept old gasoline as Household Hazardous Waste. This drop-off is also in the Transfer Station's Recycling Area.
