“No More Trash Bags for Children

Living in Foster Care Day”

on Tuesday, March 13 at 10:30 a.m.

Councilmember Sidney Katz will recognize work of

Comfort Cases

ROCKVILLE, Md., March 8, 2018—The Montgomery County Council will proclaim March 13, 2018 as “No More Trash Bags for Children Living in Foster Care Day.”  At the beginning of the Council meeting, Councilmember Sidney Katz will present Comfort Cases with a proclamation recognizing that every child has the right to a dignified experience in foster care.  The meeting will take place in the Third Floor Council Hearing Room.

The Council has joined with Comfort Cases to recognize and support the emotional and mental health needs of child abuse victims. Comfort Cases is a local nonprofit organization with a mission to provide a proper bag, which is filled with items that are both essential and comforting, for children living in foster care as they find their forever homes.

“The instability that many children living in foster care experience as they move from home to home is often unavoidable; however, making these transitions as comfortable as possible should be our goal,” said Councilmember Katz. “Comfort Cases provides children living in foster care with carryalls filled with necessities like shampoo, toothbrushes and pajamas and comfort items like blankets, stuffed animals and books. Every child should be able to pack their belongings in an appropriate case that is their own.”

Montgomery County Child Welfare Services investigated 2,467 cases of child abuse and neglect throughout fiscal year 2017 and reported that 406 children were living in foster care. Each of these children has the right to a dignified experience, which starts with the elimination of trash bags for placing and transporting personal items.

Councilmember Katz and the Council encourage all residents to raise awareness about child abuse prevention and intervention efforts and to support nonprofit organizations that serve children who live with foster or adoptive families.

The Council meeting will be televised live by County Cable Montgomery (CCM). The channel can be viewed on Cable Channels 996 (high definition) and 6 (standard definition) on Comcast, Channels 1056 (HD) and 6 (SD) on RCN and Channel 30 on Verizon.

The Council meeting also will be available live via streaming through the Council web site at http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/COUNCIL/ondemand/index.html .
