Update: Suspect Arrested for Derwood Area Attempted Rape

For Immediate Release: Saturday, December 8, 2018

Detectives from the Montgomery County Police Department – Special Victims Investigations Division (SVID) have arrested and charged Joao B Rodrigues, age 24, of the 8200 block of Amity Circle in Gaithersburg, with the attempted second-degree rape of an adult female that occurred at an apartment complex located at 8010 Gramercy Boulevard.

As part of this investigation, 1st District Special Assignment Team (SAT) officers, in plain clothes, conducted surveillance in the area where the attempted rape occurred in an attempt to locate the suspect.  On December 7, SAT officers observed an individual matching the surveillance photographs of the suspect walking in the area of Crabbs Branch Way and Shady Grove Road and watched as he walked into the apartment building located at 8010 Gramercy Boulevard.  The male then walked to the bathrooms where the attempted rape had taken place.  SAT officers took the person into custody and identified him as Rodrigues.

During a interview with detectives, Rodrigues stated that he had entered the building on previous occasions to use the bathroom.  Rodrigues made admissions of guilt during the interview.

Rodrigues was transported to the Central Processing Unit for processing and held without bond.
