County Executive Marc Elrich Statement on Katherine Gugulis

For Immediate Release: Thursday 20 June

Katherine Gugulis’ opinion letter, in the Washington Post, regarding the ongoing discussion about encouraging more accessory dwelling units in the county expresses thoughts and beliefs that are not consistent with my commitment to fostering a more inclusive and culturally sensitive County.  The language she used was inappropriate and unacceptable, especially for a person who was recently appointed to serve on the County’s Charter Review Commission.  At no point in the review of Ms. Gugulis' request to serve on the Commission did my staff nor I find any indication that she held the views expressed in her letter.  In light of her recent comments, I believe the County will be better served if Ms. Gugulis steps down from her position.  Her views are not reflective of the diverse and vibrant communities that make Montgomery County a special place.
