Statement from Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich on New Travel Ban Enacted by the Trump Administration

For Immediate Release: Monday 9 June

The Trump administration’s new travel ban went into effect today, and the impact is as immediate as it is unjust. President Trump’s decision to announce this ban during Eid al-Adha was equally cruel and deeply disrespectful.

The ban targets people from 19 countries, most of them Black, Brown or Muslim-majority nations. It blocks families from reuniting. It prevents people from seeking safety. It shuts the door on students, workers and refugees. There’s no legitimate security reason for it. This is not about public safety, this is a revival of the first Muslim Ban, expanded and repackaged. And it’s part of a broader effort to turn fear and hate into national policy.

The goal is clear: isolate certain communities and normalize discrimination through official government action. In Montgomery County, we reject this approach. Residents from every country on that list live here, work here and raise families here. They are part of our community, and they should be able to live without fear of being separated from their loved ones or treated as threats.

I want our Muslim, African and immigrant communities to know that we see what’s happening and we are standing with you. You deserve safety, respect and the ability to participate fully in the life of this country.

We will keep working with our Office of Community Partnerships, faith leaders and legal advocates to make sure people have access to reliable information and know what rights they still have. I encourage anyone with questions to utilize the Gilchrist Immigrant Resource Center.
