For Immediate Release: Tuesday 2 December
I want to congratulate Councilmember Natali Fani-González on her election as Council President and Councilmember Marilyn Balcombe on her election as Vice President. I appreciate their willingness to lead.
We are entering a period shaped by state budget pressures and continued unpredictability at the federal level. At the same time, major economic development projects are moving forward, our affordable housing pipeline is expanding, and we are making real progress on climate, transportation, and support for vulnerable residents. I look forward to working with President Fani-González and Vice President Balcombe to maintain that momentum and ensure our residents have a County government that responds to the moment with clarity, compassion, and determination.
I would also like to express my appreciation to Council President Kate Stewart and Council Vice President Will Jawando for their work over the past year. This has been the most challenging period for the County since the pandemic. The actions of the Trump Administration and Congressional Republicans have created serious consequences for our residents, including cuts, freezes, workforce disruptions, and policy shifts that disproportionately affect those who can least afford them.
Throughout it all, Kate and Will were present, steady, and willing to collaborate. They helped move forward important affordable housing, transportation, public safety, and social service efforts at a time when constant federal turbulence made local stability even more important. Their partnership mattered, and I am grateful for it.
